Betty’s Story:

Both my husband and I loved Epping Forest since we were small children. My parents had a tandem and sidecar and they felt fairly safe transporting my younger sister and I all around there even though the Second World War was on.  David and his family were nearer to the forest and could walk to a part near the Rising Sun.

In fact, since we married in 1955 we have always lived within a short distance of our beloved forest and never considered moving away.

Sadly my husband died six years ago with Parkinson’s but until illness curtailed his walking, we both spent time there each day with our dog Sally in our beloved forest. Sally was an expert at helping us clear the litter around and in the pond just near to where we lived – she would be seen jumping in and swimming out to retrieve a plastic bottle or something we could not reach ourselves, laying it at our feet (she couldn’t reach a litter bin so left us to  do the honours)  She too loved Epping Forest. We moved to Theydon Bois to a  bungalow as stairs were getting a problem for David, but he could still enjoy the Green and lake which are very close by.
