In Summer 2025, we were incredibly touched to have received a donation in memory of Tony Cox with a hand-written note from his wife, Lorna Cox, who shared memories of Tony and his connections with the Forest. With her permission, we featured the article in our Autumn/ Winter 2025, of which you can read below.
In memory of Tony Cox
by Lorna Cox

Lorna’s hand-written note sharing her memory of Tony
Tony had a long association with Epping Forest. In the last 1940s and 1950s he played in the Forest with his friends. As they lived in Walthamstow they got there by bus.
We married in 1968 and moved to South Woodford. In my ignorance I had not heard of Epping Forest even though I only lived in Ware which is not far away as the crow flies. I know the Forest well now but there are still parts, particularly in the northern sections, that I don’t know.
Our two daughters were brought up on nice Sunday morning walks in the Forest and Tony and I continued the routine regularly until recently. Whenever my grandsons visit we always go to the Forest.
My husband is now buried at Greenacres cemetery near North Weald, which is as near as we could find. I am planning to join him when my time comes.
As a bonus North Weald has an airfield! Tony was very interested in the aircraft of World War II and the period shortly afterwards. As the funeral was finishing a modestly large aircraft flew over very loud and very low. Now I think it may have been a Dakota, one of my husband’s favourite planes which we have a model of standing on the piano. Most people would think it was ruining the peace, but we took it as a fly-past for Tony.
About donation in memory of a loved one:
We would be honoured if you would like to celebrate the life of a loved one who was passionate about Epping Forest by leaving a donation in their memory. We will make sure that these kind gifts will work hard, helping to protect and preserve the Forest that those people cherished, so that it can be enjoyed and loved for generations to come.
Giving in honour or remembrance of someone can help their memory to live on in this wonderful ancient Forest. When you take a stroll among the ancient trees, wander through ancient monuments, or reflect next to one of many tranquil ponds, you can think of them and know your kindness and their love for the Forest has helped this precious place and its irreplaceable biodiversity, culture and heritage to thrive for many years to come.
