Explore Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge

Step into Tudor history at the Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, a rare 16th-century timber-framed building near Chingford Plain. Originally built for Henry VIII, the lodge offers great views over the forest and features exhibits on royal hunting, local wildlife, and traditional woodland crafts. It’s a family-friendly stop and gives context to the forest’s long cultural heritage.

Take on the BIG Walk!

Previously known as ‘The Centenary Walk’, the route covers the stretch of the Forest starting from Manor Park in Newham and going all the way to Epping in Essex. It was first established in 1978 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the Epping Forest Act in 1878. Why not request our Big Walk map, below – to help guide your trail through the forest (whether in part or the whole thing).

Relax & Unwind Beside Connaught Water

Just a short walk from Chingford, Connaught Water is a tranquil lake surrounded by reeds and woodland, ideal for spotting birds like herons, mandarin ducks, and great crested grebes. There’s a flat, accessible walking loop around the water, making it perfect for families or relaxed strolls. Don’t forget your binoculars and a thermos—this is one of the best birding spots in the forest!

Picnic and Views at High Beach

Located near the Epping New Road, High Beach offers sweeping views across the forest and into London on a clear day. It’s one of the most popular spots for a picnic, with open grassland, food kiosks, and access to several walking trails. If you’re lucky you might also spot the sunset through the trees.

Wander the Lost Ponds and Heathland at Wanstead Flats

On the southern edge of the forest lies Wanstead Flats, a sprawling open area that’s especially rich in birdlife and a haven for dog walkers.
